Rampant betting has started in the city along with the continuing World Cup Cricket. Victims are mostly youths. Police officials also accept it. But they express their helplessness to check it in big way as this betting is being done through mobile phones, Internet and at private houses. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Berhampur, Sarat Mohapatra urged citizens of the city to inform police about this illegal betting racket immediately if they came across it. As a precautionary measure all cyber cafes in the city have been directed to remove their screened enclosures and closed cubicles.
According to sources such betting is continuing in old bus stand, Gandhi Nagar and SNT road areas of the city. The stakes are quite high. It may sound unbelievable, students are losing thousands of rupees and at times lakhs through this betting racket. Police officials are worried that these youths usually turn to criminal activity to get out of the debt trap they fall into due to the lure of betting related to Cricket. Even higher secondary students are at times found to be trapped in this betting racket for which their parents have to pay back huge sums to dubious persons.
On February 10, city police had arrested young technical graduate turned a chain snatcher Abhishek Mohapatra. He had opted to enter the world of criminal activity as he had a debt burden of around Rs. 10 lakh . One of the major reasons behind this massive debt was his addiction to Cricket betting. Usually these youths are compelled to take up crime as the persons whom they have to pay back have criminal backgrounds, who threaten them of dire consequences.
Former president of Ganjam Bar Association, Bhagaban Sahu said police should not sit back idle and keep watch on places where mostly youths get together to gamble and bet in the name of watching cricket matches. As per him, Parents also have to be extra careful regarding the movement and habits of their sons, especially the college going ones, he said.
