Members of Ganjam district Brahman Mahasabha took out a silent rally in the city on Tuesday from the Ganesh temple demanding implementation of a reservation policy based on economic status in the country.
The Brahmins started their march from the Ganesh temple at Hill Patna and travelled through main roads of the city with placards in hand. Their destination wasn't any temple but the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner, southern range.
Although they had placards in hand like any new age protestors they were clad in their traditional attire complete with sandal paste and vermillion marks on their forehead.
Memorandum submitted
They handed over a memorandum addressed to the Governor and the President of the country at the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner.
President of the organisation Pramod Kumar Panda said their main demand was abolition of caste-based reservation policy which was dividing the country.
According to him, they wanted the country to follow a reservation policy which should be on economic basis irrespective of caste, creed or religion.
The Brahman Mahasabha members also demanded that whatever the reservation policy, there should not be any reservation in case of promotions. “We want all citizens of the country to be treated as equals”, he added. As per the members of the organisation the creamy layer that has been created by the caste-based reservation policy has transformed it self into another exploiting class which is not identifying itself with the downtrodden of their own caste.
After the rally, the members got together for a meeting to discuss about their future plan of action. They decided to eradicate tradition of dowry by promoting dowry less marriages and sponsor dowry less marriages of poor unmarried girls.
This meeting was also attended by former deputy speaker of the Assembly Ram Chandra Panda and president of State body of Brahman Mahasabha, Sarat Chandra Mohapatra.
